Olivet College radio station moves to new frequency
Mar 29, 2010

The Olivet College radio station, 89.7 WOCR, has announced plans to move to a new frequency on the FM radio band and increase its power to 500 watts. The changes, given preliminary approval by the Federal Communications Commission, will allow WOCR to move its broadcasts to a new frequency, 89.1 FM, and quadruple the strength of its broadcast signal. A mutual cooperation agreement between Olivet College and the Holy Oratory of St. Philip Neri of Kalamazoo is the basis for the historic change in the operations of the colleges noncommercial educational radio station.

Under that agreement, the Holy Oratory will compensate the college for agreeing to move to the new frequency, opening the way for the Holy Oratory to increase the reach of its new radio station based in Bedford. The funds from Holy Oratory will be used by Olivet to purchase a new transmitter for WOCR and pay for other costs associated with the change.

The college radio station first went on air in 1975 to serve the campus and the surrounding community. According to Gary Smith, director of Olivets journalism/mass communication program, some of the equipment first purchased 35 years ago was still being used to transmit the WOCR signal until a year ago, when the transmission equipment failed. Smith says the changes will increase the WOCR coverage area and provide a better radio signal. He adds, The new transmitter will ensure that the station will be able to continue its broadcasting and educational missions for another 35 years, as well as reach and serve people in a much larger geographic area.

WOCR serves as a professional training ground for students and offers a variety of music and information programs produced by Olivet College students. The station also provides live coverage of the colleges football and basketball games and sponsors special campus events. The WOCR signal is streamed live on the Internet at www.wocrfm.com.

Olivet College anticipates receiving final approval for the changes from the FCC within the next few weeks. For more information, contact Smith at (269) 749-7693.
