Olivet College Jazz Band to feature special guest Danny Barber

The Olivet College Jazz Band will present its annual Last Jam concert Tuesday, April 13 at 7:30 p.m. at the Oaks Theatre in downtown Olivet. The production, which is free and open to the public, will also feature a performance by special guest trumpeter Danny Barber.

Barber served as first trumpeter for the United States Army Jazz Ensemble, performing at concert halls, colleges and high schools in 48 states before receiving an honorable discharge and Meritorious Service Award. Soon after, he was called to perform with the Tommy Dorsey Band under the direction of Murray McCeaceran and alongside Buddy Morrow. He later composed and arranged music for jazz artist Bobby Christian.

Barber has played lead trumpet for a long list of entertainers, including: Tony Bennett, Sammy Davis Jr., Benny Goodman, Doc Severinsen, Frank Sinatra, The Temptations and many others. He has performed in more than 2,000 radio and television commercials and has contributed to movie soundtracks, such as A League of Their Own.

Under the direction of Jonathon Gewirtz, adjunct instructor of music, the Jazz Band will perform a variety of big band jazz selections, including pieces composed by Dizzy Gillespie, Thad Jones and Oliver Nelson.

Student performers include: Jeremy Adams, a senior from Novi, piano; Nick Adsit, a sophomore from Muskegon, trumpet; Jesse Barber, a senior from Vandalia, trumpet; Zac Coddaire, a sophomore from Lake Odessa, trumpet; Jamison Cronk, a freshman from Harbor Springs, trombone; Evan Cusumano, a sophomore from Richmond, baritone saxophone; Justin Gargus, a senior from Bangor, bass; Kait Greathouse, a freshman from Eaton Rapids, trombone; Emily Heeren, a freshman from Rockford, trumpet; Kenny Lowe, a junior from Lansing, tenor saxophone; LuAnn Pickford, a sophomore from Sherwood, alto saxophone; Dakota Rhodes, a freshman from Olivet, trombone; Seth Story, a senior from Ithaca, trombone; and Blake Walters, a senior from Olivet, alto saxophone. Also performing are faculty members Dustin Byrd, assistant professor of humanities, drums; and Marcus Darden, assistant professor of computer science, tenor saxophone.
