Olivet College students to participate in final service learning trip

Seventeen Olivet College students and two faculty members will spend two weeks in Jamaica April 29 through May 13 as part of a service learning class titled Social and Environmental Justice in Jamaica. The class is being held as part of the colleges Intensive Learning Term.

Students will spend half their time building homes for families of St. Thomas Parish through The Divine Word Mission at Our Lady of Assumption Parish in Morant Bay. The rest of the trip will be spent studying the culture, environment and history of Jamaica. Activities include visiting the U.S. Embassy in Kingston, studying fair trade coffee while visiting a plantation in the Blue Mountains, and learning the roots of reggae music while visiting the home and recording studio of Bob Marley.

Students participating in the trip include: Joseph Bargerstock, a senior from Westland; Kellen Beckwith, a junior from Farmington Hills; Jessica Brannon, a senior from Olivet; Kristin Chase, a senior from Hastings; Rachel Delaney, a sophomore from Battle Creek; Michael Harden, a senior from St. Johns; Justin Hutchison, a senior from Olivet; Blake Iobe, a freshman from Marshall; Brook Juhola, a sophomore from Olivet; Patrick Leahy, a senior from Okemos; Branden McLean, a junior from Benton Harbor; Ashly Miller, a senior from Olivet; Ian Peters, a sophomore from Marshall; Elizabeth Tengler, a sophomore from Olivet; Blake Walters, a senior from Olivet; Adam Wilson, a junior from Battle Creek; and Dana Yeager, a junior from Charlotte.

The class will be led by Maria Davis, Ph.D., Natural and Physical Sciences Department chair and professor of biology, and Rev. Michael Fales, assistant professor of interdisciplinary studies and religion and director of service learning and campus ministries. It is the 14th and final overnight service trip of the 2009-10 academic year.
