Olivet College Echo receives honors
Oct 13, 2010

Journalists for the Olivet College student newspaper, The Echo, won two Division III school awards in the 2010 Michigan Press Association (MPA) College Editorial Contest in Lansing. The publication received second place and honorable mention awards.

A staff effort earned second place honors in the News Story category for coverage of a spring 2009 crime involving a student traveling in an international study course. Multiple staff members contributed to international news reports and information in building the story, which was honored for using hard facts and multiple sources.

In the same category for Division III college newspapers, sophomore Sarah Phillips of Hastings, currently assistant editor, earned an honorable mention for her story on college speaker Karren Kraemer, who oversees an organization to support families of missing persons believed to have been victims of domestic violence.

The Olivet College Echo has been in publication since 1888, and regularly enters and earns honors in the annual newspaper contest. The newspaper is a member of the Michigan Collegiate Press Association, as well as the Associated Collegiate Press and the Society of Professional Journalists. The Echo has won 15 awards in the past four years from the MPA.
