Olivet College will commemorate its 167th year by celebrating Founders’ Day Wednesday, Feb. 23 at 1:30 p.m. in the Olivet Congregational Church. The program, featuring Olivet College President Steven M. Corey, Ph.D., and keynote speaker, Donald Rowe, is free and open to the public.

Rowe, professor of art, has been teaching at Olivet since 1968. His four decades of service to the college have included courses in art history, color and composition, drawing, painting, printmaking, art appreciation and general education. He has also served as past chair of the Visual Arts Department and director of the liberal arts core program.

A resident of Olivet, Rowe earned a bachelor’s degree in visual design from the Institute of Design at Illinois Institute of Technology and a Master of Fine Art degree in printmaking from the University of Hartford in Connecticut. He has exhibited his work in many art shows throughout the country, including Arkansas, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota and Texas.

Olivet was founded in 1844 by congregational missionaries led by “Father” John J. Shipherd and was one of the first colleges in the United States to admit women and minorities. In 1859, a state charter was granted, and in 1863, Olivet graduated its first class, which consisted of three women.
