Olivet College to host "Rock the Cans" featuring The JHD
Mar 09, 2011

Olivet College is hosting its first-ever “Rock the Cans” food drive Wednesday, March 30 at 9 p.m. in MacKay Gymnasium. The event, which is held in conjunction with the college’s annual Spring Service Day, features burgeoning local rock band The JHD, as well as members of Free Yo’ Mind, Olivet’s creative and performing arts student organization. Epiphany Sound Productions, of Dimondale, will control sound for the show.

Admission to the concert is free with a non-perishable food item. All donations benefit the Olivet Congregational Church, which is in the process of restocking its food pantry for the spring season.

The JHD is comprised of Justin Hutchison and Blake Walters, both 2010 graduates of Olivet College, and Dan Hogan, who is employed by the college’s Campus Safety Office. Walters also serves as Olivet’s community service coordinator.

Performing since early 2009, The JHD recently beat out more than 140 bands to become winners of Lansing’s Hometown Rock Crown 2010, and their first single, “Looking for Work,” can be heard on Lansing’s 97.5 NOW FM. Quickly gaining notoriety throughout mid-Michigan, the group performs extensively in cities such as Ann Arbor, Battle Creek, Flint, Kalamazoo and Lansing, and it set to release an album in May.

Their self described sound of reggae, blues, jazz and hip hop “picks up where many great trios of the 1960s left off – a place where catchy songs met with commanding instrumentation, and where the true way to hear a band was live.”

For more information about the event, call (269) 749-7127. To listen to the music of The JHD, visit www.thejhd1.bandcamp.com or www.facebook.com/TheJHD.
