Olivet College student recognized for excellence in journalism

Olivet College sophomore Mitch Galloway, of Coldwater, was recently recognized for his outstanding work in journalism by the Detroit Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ). Galloway was presented with a Lawrence Laurain scholarship during the society’s Excellence in Journalism Banquet April 16 at the San Marino Club of Troy.

A journalism and mass communication major, Galloway is editor of The Echo, Olivet College’s student newspaper, and a freelance sports writer for the Battle Creek Enquirer. He also serves as a student employee for Olivet’s Office of College Relations, for which he contributes to a number of publications including press releases, website feature stories and Shipherd’s Record alumni magazine. Galloway earned the college’s Media Prize for his work with The Echo. He has also been named to the Dean’s List numerous times, and is a member of the Comet baseball team.

“Mitch is that rare individual who thinks deeply and carefully about news,” said Joanne Williams, associate professor of journalism and mass communication at Olivet College. “He has a keen eye for good stories, whether they are sports or international affairs. He is a true journalist and so worthy of this honor. We are proud to claim him as a Comet.”

The Detroit SPJ’s Lawrence A. Laurain Scholarship is awarded each year to a student in a college in Southeast Michigan with a demonstrated interest in journalism. The scholarship honors the memory of Laurain, who served as president of the Detroit chapter in 1985. His journalism career spanned 17 years, including work with the Royal Oak Daily Tribune, Macomb Daily and United Press International, and serving as editor of The Oakland Press.
