A workshop and seminar titled “The Spirituality of Chant” will be offered at the St. Mary Cathedral Parish Center (219 Seymour Ave., Lansing) Wednesday, Aug. 20 from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.. The presentation will be led by Timothy Flynn, Ph.D., chair of the Performing Arts Department at Olivet College and director of music at St. Mary Cathedral.
Flynn has lectured throughout the U.S. and Europe on various scholarly topics in musicology and will be offering a practical and participatory exploration of chant for the beginner and those who love to chant. Participants will be singing various types of chants from the Holy Offices and Mass and considering the history and use of chants from before the Middle Ages to present day. The event will culminate in a sung Evening Prayer in the cathedral sung by all and led by Rev. Msgr. Bernard Reilly, cathedral rector.
