Olivet College is continuing its partnership with Special Olympics Area 8 in sponsoring the Special Olympics Track & Field Meet Friday, May 15, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Sexton High School in Lansing. The organizations are calling for volunteers to assist with events throughout the day.

KayDee Perry, assistant professor of health and human performance at Olivet College, is working with Area 8 to coordinate volunteer recruitment efforts for the event.

“Olivet College is anticipating many student, staff and faculty volunteers from our institution, come rain or shine,” Perry said. “The joy and enthusiasm this event brings to athletes and volunteers alike is truly immeasurable – we hope others will join in on this amazing event as well!”

More than 1,000 athletes and unified partners are expected to participate at this year’s meet. Volunteers from Olivet College will be coordinating a bocce ball tournament, as well as facilitating the work of high school volunteers from Olivet High School’s Student Government group and Charlotte High School’s LINKS program. “The Track & Field Meet for Area 8 Special Olympics provides an excellent opportunity for our college students to be role models and form relationships with students in our immediate area,” Perry added.

About Special Olympics Michigan

The mission of Special Olympics Michigan is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

Athletes develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy while participating in the sharing of gifts, skills and friendship among their families, Special Olympics athletes and the community. The athletes achieve their dreams with the support of caring volunteers, coaches, family members and staff. Donations from Michigan citizens and businesses provide funding for the program.
