Linda Logan, Ph.D., vice president and dean of student life for Olivet College, has received the 2017 Giving Back Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity and inclusion publication in higher education. The Giving Back Award honors college and university administrators who go above and beyond their everyday leadership duties and “give back” to their campuses and communities. Logan will be featured, along with 38 other recipients, in the April 2017 Leadership Support and Giving Back issue of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine.
Giving Back Award recipients were nominated by their colleagues and selected by INSIGHT Into Diversity based on their outstanding demonstration of social responsibility; involvement with students, faculty, staff, and the community; and commitment to serving underrepresented populations. Each honoree is recognized for his or her passion, dedication, and support for diversity and inclusion.
“Dr. Logan led our school’s intensive undertaking to assess our diversity and inclusion efforts and policies, coordinating working teams around the areas of student recruitment and employee diversity. Her work resulted in tremendous advancements in these areas,” Steven M. Corey, Ph.D., president of Olivet College said. “She is a model of leadership both on campus and across the state. Her commitment to inclusion and diversity strengthens not only Olivet College, but the Olivet community and beyond. She sets the bar for all of us.”
Logan was selected for the award because of her commitment to recruiting, retaining and supporting underrepresented students at Olivet College. She helped create the school’s summer bridge program, which for nearly 10 years has helped pave the path for hundreds of students of color who otherwise would not have considered college as an option, and she has been instrumental in creating many support programs on campus that serve not only students of color but other underrepresented groups, especially LGBTQ students. She is also responsible for creating and ensuring participation in many community-building programs, including hosting soul food dinners at her home. In addition, Logan has been influential in searches for faculty and academic staff to help ensure Olivet College has a diverse pool and that the school addresses questions of diversity and inclusion in the search process.
“Dr. Logan’s work goes well above and beyond the call of her duties as the head of student life,” said Maria G. Davis, Ph.D., provost and dean of Olivet College. “As a woman of color herself, she brings extraordinary passion and commitment to her work with all students but never loses sight of her special focus on being the voice and the heart of our underrepresented students.”
Holly Mendelson, publisher of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, said, “The Giving Back Award is being awarded to leaders of institutions of higher education who exemplify what it truly means to ‘give back’ to others. These administrators are role models, and we honor their efforts to promote diversity and inclusion on their campuses and in their communities.”
