Summer may be coming to an end, but that doesn’t mean the fun has to end, too! The countdown to August 18 – Move-In Day – has started, and the Olivet College community is getting ready to roll out the red carpet to welcome home the Class of 2021.
We understand the first few weeks of college can be both crazy and fun. Your OC family wants to make sure the FUN outweighs anything else, so to help you prepare in advance, we’ve put together some important Move-In Day and Welcome Week schedules and checklists.
…And don’t even worry about getting bored!
Here’s just a quick rundown on what to expect your first week as a Comet.
Move-In Day: Friday, August 18
Did you remember to pack a toothbrush? Do you have your laptop? What about a favorite photo of your beloved pooch or feline friend? Have you communicated with your roommate to get a feel for who’s bringing what for the room? Take a look at OC’s customized guide and tips on what to pack and what to leave at home.
Move-In time for unloading the car is 8:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. Be sure to save some time to visit the Market in the Square. If you forget any dorm room essentials, we bet you’ll find it there!
President Steven M. Corey, Ph.D., invites families to the President’s Picnic Lunch in The Square beginning at 11:30 a.m. This will be followed by the Provost’s Lighting the Lamp of Learning and Transition to College Ceremony at 12:30 p.m. Families, have the cameras ready!
After the transition ceremony, students will say goodbye to their families. Following a short break, students will continue with the Advanced Learning Term (ALT) Kick-Off, dinner and welcome events throughout the evening, including Casino and Karaoke Night.
Throughout the weekend a number of activities have been planned to help you adjust to your new home away from home and college life. You’ll continue the ALT, learn about life in residence halls, and spend tons of time with classmates creating community, having fun at Cutler Athletic Complex, and even enjoying a pool party at Upton Pool. (Don’t forget to pack a swim suit!)
The First Week of Class
Be sure to rise and shine Monday, August 21, because that’s the first day of class. It’s now up to you to get up and going in the morning. Don’t forget to build in time for breakfast and coffee! And, keep each class syllabus handy. Be sure to pay attention to it in every class, starting on day one, so you’ll know what is expected of you in each class each week.
Monday evening, set aside the books for a few hours and head downtown for dinner and Night on the Town. It’s an awesome chance to get to know the local businesses as well as win some prizes and get tons of free stuff, like pens, sticky notes, school supplies, food, gift cards … you name it!
Tuesday evening, be sure to attend the It’s On Us Pep Rally in The Square. It’s both fun and important. (And there will be ice cream!)
Wednesday is the first weekly seminar, where you’ll meet with fellow students and faculty in your academic program. Afterward, two memorable OC events will take place: the President’s Opening Convocation and Stand-Up. We don’t want to give too much away now. Let’s just say it’s emotional, it’s tradition and it’s about family.
Finally, what better way to end your first week of college than with a celebration? You won’t want to miss the Friday evening Welcome Back Party: OC Lit at the Kirk Center.
