Meet Frank Schumacher, OC’s director of facilities. While most of his work is done behind the scenes, the faculty, staff and students at Olivet College recognize the impact made by Frank and his team to create a safe, welcoming and high-functioning campus. Frank has more than 30 years of experience working in facilities, and has been in the field since he graduated high school. He’s only worked at Olivet for two and a half years, but Frank has become an integral part of the campus community, even serving on the Homecoming Committee to help students and alumni enjoy the iconic event every year.

Why do you love working at OC?

Being a small campus it gives one the feel of belonging. My talents and skillsets are being used to contribute to the campus facilities.

What are some of the main responsibilities of the Physical Plant?

We are responsible for maintaining all the buildings/grounds on campus, taking care of student/staff requests, keeping campus buildings safe with the required safety training and required inspections, doing all set-ups and moving that is required around campus, planning and scheduling all conferencing groups, and scheduling all OC vehicles for use.

What’s your key to teamwork and managing a large work load efficiently?

We have about 20 staff members as well as student workers. Given we are a small team we have to work as efficient as possible, so our motto is, “Work smarter not harder. If we don’t have the time to do the work right the first time, then when will we have time to go back and do it a second time?”

Why would you encourage students to attend OC?

Growing up not too far from Olivet, had I known about the college back in the day I would have definitely considered going to school at OC because it is small and this gives students more one-on-one time with professors. That allows someone who needs a little more instruction or attention a better opportunity to learn and grow.

What are some things you look forward to in your role?

I really enjoy working with students and staff, being able to share my work experience/knowledge with staff, and new construction projects or remodeling buildings.

What is the number one piece of advice you share with students?

Never stop learning. Learning makes us all better individuals, and more prepared to be productive as well as a positive influence to those around us as well as in the world. Be willing to give back.

What is an interesting fact about yourself?

I love to ride my motorcycle whenever I can.
