Girard Brown joined Olivet College last semester to serve as the Dole Hall Director. He recently earned his master’s degree in higher education administration and also holds a bachelor’s degree in communication. Girard has a special interest in student life and has worked in this field at four different colleges in both Michigan and California. At OC, Girard hopes to build relationships with students and support a culture of care.
What brought you to OC?
I was looking to kick off my career at an institution that can help me grow into the professional I want to become. I got into student affairs to be student-focused, and Olivet definitely showed me they are a student-focused college. I have yet to be disappointed by that. I have met so many wonderful students and employees that have been welcoming to me since I first arrived here. It has always been nice to feel supported by those around me, especially now with me being new here.
What is your favorite memory from your time at OC so far?
I don’t have a specific memory, but I have enjoyed spending time with my resident adviser staff members over here in Dole. Just some of the conversations I have had with them and other students have been great!
Why are you passionate about working in student engagement?
I am passionate about working with students because of those who did that for me during my undergrad experience. My mentors poured support into me and helped me navigate and grow in a new environment. If it was not for them, I would not be where I am today. They helped me get the most out of my college experience, and now I hope to give back to students in the same way.
What is your leadership style like?
I believe in leading by example and participating alongside your students and team. If you expect something from your students, you need to be able to mirror that for them. That is how I was raised to be by my mother and my mentors.
Why do you encourage students to get involved at OC?
Smaller institutions are about getting involved and getting in touch with the surrounding community. I encourage students to get involved on campus outside of being an athlete; jump in and get involved with Greek life, a club or an academic organization. I did that during my undergraduate experience and it was some of the best times of my life. Make this time memorable so you can do the same!
What is an interesting or little known fact about yourself?
It’s not a well-kept secret, but I am a huge nerd (Star Wars, video games, anime, MMA and movies). I am always ready and willing to have a conversation about any of those things. I’ve also become a big foodie in the last year and enjoy trying new foods!
