Lori Britton serves as the library circulation desk manager, transfer student adviser and certification officer at Olivet College. She has been a member of the Comet family since 1982 and has a natural love for working with students. Lori especially enjoys building personal relationships with students as she manages student employees in the library, assists students in transferring credits and stays connected with OC alumni.

Why do you love OC?

I love Olivet College because of all of the students I have met over the years. Each one comes here with the same goal — to graduate. By the time they leave, they have all added many, many chapters to their story. And, I love it when they feel comfortable enough to share the first few chapters of their story with me, the chapters that include their family and high school accomplishments and more. You really get to know some of these students when you are lucky enough to have a role on campus that requires you to meet one-on-one with students or be a supervisor for work-study students.

What is your favorite memory from your time at OC?

I used to enjoy the process of registering each and every student for their classes. It was my favorite week of the semester. I was guaranteed to see just about every student, which was a good way to get to know them a bit. I would be stationed at the door of Mott 212A and students would line up down the hall and around the corner back toward the auditorium. One by one, each student would hand me a card that had their course selections on it and I would then enter each course into the computer. Technology has come a long way!

Where does your passion for working with students stem from?

It just comes naturally!

What’s the average day in your role, or some of the unique things you are responsible for?

My current role at Olivet covers three areas. I am the circulation desk manager where I oversee the daily operations behind the circulation desk, including handling the switchboard and supervising student workers. I am also the transfer student adviser. In this role, I evaluate all undergraduate transfer transcripts for prospective students to let them know how many credits will transfer and if any of their credits will cover the liberal arts core requirements. I also put together the degree audits for transfer students. And, I am the certification officer. Even though we no longer have an education program, I still need to be available for any student who went through our teacher prep program.

Why do you encourage students to attend OC?

I encourage students to attend OC to experience the small class sizes, dedicated faculty and staff, beautiful campus, service trips and work-study program — the opportunities are endless.

What do you look forward to?

I love Move-In Day! I’ve paired up with Barb Spencer, executive assistant to the president, for the last three or four years to be the “water girls” in Blair Hall. I also love the beginning of the fall semester when students return to campus. I miss not having students here over the summer.

What is an interesting or little-known fact about yourself?

Hmm, I consider myself a rather boring person, but I am a huge Def Leppard fan! It wouldn’t be right if I didn’t also mention that I am the grandma of two insanely cute grandsons, 10-year-old Evan and 3-year-old Kellan.
