Ready to choose your college? It’s an exciting time, and a big decision.
That’s why when it comes to picking your college, it’s easiest to think of it like a large funnel. Here are the steps you can take to easily narrow your college search. Hit one step at a time, and you’ll be well on your way to going to the college that’s right for you.
1. Do you want to go to a college in-state or out of state?
This may depend on how close you want to be to your family and your hometown, or whether you’re ready to explore the world a bit more. Tuition may also come into consideration with this step. Many schools charge a higher tuition for out of state students.
2. What size school do you want to go to?
Schools come in all shapes and sizes, and it’s important to find the size that fits your needs. You might thrive in a smaller school if you enjoy having close relationships with your professors, smaller class sizes, and the idea of designing your own major. A larger school might be for you if you enjoy less structure, the idea of larger class sizes, and less personal attention from professors.
3. Do you want to go to a school that’s urban or rural?
It’s important to think about whether you want to go to school in a metropolis or a a school in a town with a smaller population – or even, something in the middle. Think not only about the school itself but what you like to do on the weekends, and during your free time. Each option offers different opportunities, so it’s important to make sure you choose a school in a location that fits your interests.
4. Do they have your major?
There is no point attending a school that doesn’t have your major! Do your research and make sure the school you choose offers a major in your career of choice. It would also be beneficial to see what kind of internship opportunities are offered, as well as study abroad opportunities, and service trips. All will give you a well rounded education.
5. Take a campus tour!
Now that you’ve got your list of school’s narrowed down, it’s time to visit campus! Touring a campus gives you insight into the look and feel of the campus, the student population, type of faculty, and more. It will give you an inside look at what the next four years of your life could look like. A very important step!
