ATHLETICS IDENTITY REFRESH FAQs
WHY DID OLIVET COLLEGE CHOOSE TO REFRESH ITS ATHLETICS IDENTITY?
Recently Olivet College has seen a resurgence of its academic and athletic reputation throughout the state and more specifically within the Capital Area Region. This recognition is a direct result of the college’s amazing students, faculty, staff and alumni who are excelling in the classroom, marketplace and on the field.
Because of this and new efforts in updating marketing and promotional materials for the college it was determined that this was the time to refresh OC Athletics brand identity while reinforcing and differentiating the college’s identity within the region. Rest assured, Olivet College is committed to its long tradition of using “Comets” as its athletic nickname as well as red and white as the school colors.
HOW MUCH IS THE REBRANDING COSTING THE COLLEGE? AND WHY NOW?
In March, Olivet College renewed its apparel agreement and as part of the contract received the option to rebrand OC Athletics identity at no cost. This kind of rebranding work would normally cost tens of thousands of dollars. This incredibly generous opportunity along with normal planning and purchasing for the 2017-18 marketing campaign made this an ideal timeline to refresh the Comet identity.
WHAT WILL CHANGE AS A RESULT OF THE REFRESH EFFORT? WHAT WILL STAY THE SAME?
VIP Branding (www.vipbranding.com) is leading the effort in developing a complete refresh for OC Athletics brand identity. This includes a review, recommendation and likely refresh of the typography for “OLIVET COLLEGE COMETS” and the “OC”. Additionally, VIP Branding will be developing the graphical representation of the Comet mascot. This work will lead to an updated costume for the Comet mascot. At this time, no final recommendations have been made; only simple concept sketches have been drawn. A final image will be developed over time as we prepare for the “son of Clyde” to lead us into the future. Again, there is no charge to Olivet College for these branding services.
WHY IS THE MASCOT’S NAME CHANGING?
Open to all since 1844, Olivet College was the first college in Michigan to welcome women on a co-equal basis with men. Since its founding the college has been committed to equal educational access and just treatment for both genders. We wish to celebrate and respect all of our Comets by giving them a modern version of a mascot that represents our men and our women athletes equally well. Therefore, the Atletics Refresh Committee received a recommendation from the college’s administration that an update to the mascot should reflect the institution’s commitment to be inclusive by removing any indication of sex or gender in the name and costume.

The submission period concluded on April 2. Olivet College alumni, students, faculty and staff submitted suggestions for the mascot name and characteristics.
HOW WERE THE TWO FINALISTS SELECTED?
After weeks of receiving suggestions by students, alumni, faculty and staff, followed by thoughtful deliberations by the Mascot Committee, two options were submitted to the college’s senior administration for consideration. This group consists of the Olivet College president and leaders in all areas of the college including academics, admissions, alumni, athletics, donor relations, faculty, finance, IT, marketing, staff and student life.
After receiving the consent of this group, the Mascot Committee presented the options to OC Nation for their consideration.
