Junior Parker Brown is from Chesterfield, an area in Metro Detroit. He was originally drawn to Olivet College to join the swimming and diving team, but Parker has since found additional passions in podcasting, sports commentating and other production-related opportunities on campus.

“Rob Brownell helped influence me to attend Olivet College. Being the swim coach, he really showed me what was in front of me,” Parker said. “When I finally arrived at OC, my eyes were opened to the amount of opportunities that are here beyond just swimming. And today, my relationship with Coach Brownell is a mentorship. He might tell me things that I don’t want to hear but that I need to hear, and it has made be a better person.”

In addition to the swimming and diving team, Parker is also active in Greek life. “I am a member of the Kappa Sigma Alpha fraternity on campus,” he said. “I joined Kappa Sig last year because I felt as if I had a missing piece, but finding a group of guys who I can call my brothers has helped me mentally and in many other forms, like academically.”

In the classroom, Parker is a media production and communication major and a sports/recreation management minor. This unique academic path allows him to combine some of his biggest interests. “I chose my major because I have so many thing in my head that I needed to express creatively, so writing, podcasting and sports commentating have been my outlets,” he said.

Parker teams up with his friend, Sebastian O’Leary, to produce the “Foam Finger” podcast, available on Apple Podcasts. The duo offers weekly episodes featuring interviews with college coaches and athletes, including many Comets. “It has been such a great learning experience to create my own content and share it so people can enjoy the show,” Parker added.

For Parker, the close-knit Olivet College community has helped him find a second family. He hopes other high school students understand the value of a small college where they can experience living on their own for the first time in a supportive environment.
