The Olivet College Insurance and Risk Management program is celebrating its most recent national ranking, this time ranked fourth in the nation as a Best Value school by Online Accounting Degree Program. The ranking took into account dedication of a department, specializations, productivity, Gamma Iota Sigma, actuarial excellence and advanced program option.
The review stated: “Olivet College is one of the few schools with an RMI curriculum so robust that it offers its own set of specializations. This means that students will not only acquire a solid understanding of their chosen field, but they’ll also customize their education through a special interest track in agency or insurer. … [Gamma Iota Sigma] plays a significant role in the RMI degree program, offering a wide range of co-curricular activities and opportunities to augment the comprehensive business, insurance, and finance core curriculum.”
Of the top 15 schools listed, OC comes out ahead of many larger and highly respected universities throughout the nation. “Rankings such as this show the quality of our program in comparison to much larger colleges and universities across the United States. Our program is known throughout the industry as having the premier IRM program in the Midwest – and even in the country,” said Thomas R. Humphreys, CPCU, CLU, ChFC, CIC, Olivet College IRM program director and assistant professor of IRM.
Michiganders are lucky to have a leading IRM school right in their own backyard. Olivet College is worth the trip for out of state students, too. “Our program is tried and true. In existence for more than 30 years, our instructors come directly from the insurance industry and are able to provide real world experiences,” Humphreys said. “Our extensive industry connections are also invaluable come time to look for a job.”
OC’s IRM curriculum has even made its way into Michigan high schools. In an effort to introduce high school juniors and seniors to the world of IRM earlier in the college selection process, Olivet College developed the Insurance Academy in 2016, which enables high school students to earn nine free credits toward an IRM degree. Students who then choose to attend Olivet College have the potential to graduate in just three and a half years. The Academy is currently in the Lansing, Charlotte, Genesee and Eaton schools, and will kick off this fall in Traverse City and the Avondale school district in Auburn Hills.
Olivet College’s IRM program boasts an impressive 99 percent job placement rate for graduates. “The insurance industry is very support of our program. From working with students in the classroom, to offering critical internships and real-world experience, the insurance industry has played a key role in assuring our students succeed,” Humphreys said.
Having an active Gamma Iota Sigma chapter on campus helps, too. GIS is the only international business fraternity for students of insurance, risk management and actuarial science. Committed to providing students with opportunities for learning, networking, and developing as a young professional, OC’s chapter is perennially a top five chapter in the nation.
It’s no wonder the OC Insurance and Risk Management program is tops in the nation. Check it out today!
