For the first time in school history, the Olivet College women’s soccer team has swept the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Player of the Week awards. For the fourth time in her career, senior Isabelle Leon has been named the Offensive Player of the Week, and for the first time, junior Ann Fetzer has been chosen the Defensive Player of the Week.
Isabelle scored the game-winning goals in both Comet victories last week. In a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Kalamazoo College, she notched the winning tally with 1:16 left in the game. In a 2-1 win at Calvin College, Isabelle scored both goals, including the game-winner in the 79th minute. Both goals were on breakaway attempts. Ann was an integral part of the Olivet’s defense in both contests, playing all 180 minutes. The two wins pushed Olivet’s overall record to 7-4 and a tie for fourth-place in the MIAA standings with a 5-3 mark.
“I am very proud of Isabelle and Ann, especially this week after their efforts against Kalamazoo and Calvin,” said Olivet head women’s soccer coach Sarah Maracani. “Isabelle plays a huge role in our attack every week, but this week she stepped up big. She is a very calm player and knows where to be and when to be there. Ann plays a huge role in our back line at her center back position. She has stepped up tremendously this season. Ann is an extremely hard worker which makes her a very difficult defender to get passed. She was a key factor in helping us get the wins over Kalamazoo and Calvin.”
