TD Ameritrade Gives 44 Financial Planning Undergraduates VIP Access to One of the RIA Industry’s Biggest Networking and Education Events
It’s one thing to sit in a classroom studying financial planning, but what if undergraduates had the chance to spend three days networking with nearly 2,000 registered investment advisors while also learning from some the financial services industry’s leading thinkers?
Forty-four financial planning students from 22 colleges and universities had just that opportunity last week when they came to TD Ameritrade Institutional’s annual advisor conference, the 2015 National LINC, to connect with peers and explore job opportunities. Among this group were two students from Olivet College, Alexis Nichols, a junior from Lapeer, and Jared Wilson-Santos, a senior from Lansing.
As part of a long commitment to cultivate the next generation of advisors, TD Ameritrade Institutional since 2010 has invited students from colleges and universities to attend its annual RIA conference, a valuable opportunity to connect with peers, network with some of the country’s top investment advisors and learn about the latest trends alongside 3,300 advisors and other industry professionals.
Including this latest conference, TD Ameritrade Institutional has engaged with more than 150 students through its conference program over the past six years.
“We’re leading the charge in helping young financial planning professionals get their start,” said Kate Healy, managing director, TD Ameritrade Institutional. “Our student program is designed to help the RIA industry grow and thrive by expanding the ranks of talented new advisors entering the business. And for the students, it’s a wonderful opportunity to engage with advisors and generate networking opportunities that can lead to mentorships, internships and jobs later on.”
In addition to seeing inspiring presentations by former U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and basketball legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson, students at National LINC participated in breakout sessions and networking events designed specifically for them. The students were also highly visible, taking the stage to introduce speakers and participating in many sessions.
The student program is just one part of a broader commitment by TD Ameritrade Institutional to help attract and train young professionals to the financial planning business. In July, the company will announce its third group of annual Next Generation Financial Planning Scholarship & Grant winners. Each year, the company will give $5,000 scholarships to 12 undergraduate students, a $50,000 grant to a university with an established program and $25,000 to an emerging program.
Olivet College’s financial planning major prepares students for careers helping others plan for their financial security. As part of the program, students gain practical experience preparing and presenting a financial plan, as well as preparing for the life and health insurance agents’ licensing examination administered by the state of Michigan.
