Suzanna Flood

Olivet College announced Suzanna Flood as the director of the Teaching Pathway. The Teaching Pathway is a unique program for students interested in pursuing a career in teaching. This program prepares undergraduate students to enter an alternate route to teacher certification program as defined by the State of Michigan once they graduate from Olivet College. The director of the Teaching Pathway is responsible for providing leadership and oversite in the development, coordination and monitoring of the program.

“I am thrilled to now use my love and passion for education as the director of the Teaching Pathway at Olivet College,” Flood said. “This program is excellent for Olivet College and the students because it addresses the teacher shortage in our state and provides students with great opportunities to give back to their community. A student can graduate with a bachelor’s degree and become a full-time teacher with the assistance of an alternative route to certification program. The students will get hands-on experiences right away at Olivet College through classroom observations, volunteer work and even internship experiences.”

Flood recently retired from Olivet Community Schools after 28 years of service. She taught English Language Arts to middle school students, served as the English Department chair and developed English Language Arts curriculum, as well as supervising student teachers and advising student clubs and organizations. Flood also served as an adjunct professor at Olivet College from 2008 to 2012, teaching English for secondary education majors and mentoring students interested in becoming a teacher. More recently, Flood served as an adjunct instructor of writing at Olivet College. In addition, Flood is an alumna of the College, earning both her bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from Olivet.

“My time as an adjunct instructor made me realize that I enjoyed working with college students,” Flood said. “I love their energy and enthusiasm and making personal connections with students is essential — it’s the part I love the most about teaching.”

The Teaching Pathway at Olivet College prepares students to enter a State of Michigan-approved alternate route to teacher certification program after graduation. It includes a comprehensive career advising strategy combined with classroom and co-curricular opportunities. Students can pair the Teaching Pathway with any of Olivet’s 34 majors to explore the subject the student hopes to focus on in their teaching career. Students will work directly with K-12 students in experiential teaching and learning activities, with a particular focus on schools and districts with a diverse student body. A special Teaching Pathway seminar and personalized advising engages students in specialized content and ensures they are supported through their learning goals.

“Olivet College is thrilled to be offering students a way to pursue their dream of becoming a teacher in a manner that may fit their personal interests and needs better than a traditional teacher preparation program,” said Provost Maria G. Davis, Ph.D. “The Teaching Pathway option at Olivet College allows students to have all the great benefits of an Olivet College experience, including the personalized, individualized attention each student receives.  As an experienced and much-beloved teacher herself, Suzanna Flood is a wonderful choice to lead this innovative new Teaching Pathway program.”

In addition to leadership and oversite, Flood will collaborate with local school districts and alternative route providers to facilitate an innovative opportunity to pursue a career in teaching. She will also lead the advisory council for the Teaching Pathway, which guides the development, implementation and assessment of the program, and advise students, coordinate service learning opportunities and oversee cooperative education experiences.
