About the Program

If numbers are your thing, the mathematics major is a perfect fit. You’ll develop a strong foundation in mathematical terminology and notation to conquer complex problems and methods with analytical and computational approaches. Class sizes are small, so professors will know you on a first-name basis.

Prepare for the Future

A rapidly increasing workforce offers opportunities for high-earning careers in the business, industry and government fields within mathematical contexts. The mathematics major can help you prepare for a professional science master’s degree or a doctoral program in mathematics.

Mathematics is a fundamental language of the universe. Understanding mathematics unlocks many views of the world and are unique. Choosing to learn math at Olivet is a great choice because the professors are all there to help you create your path to understanding the world, from algebra to higher-order differential equations. The professors at Olivet are great and easy to work with to understand subject matter, create a class schedule, or even just to have a chat with. Every class feels very personal and interactive. — Justin, mathematics and computer science double major

Careers in Mathematics

  • Statistician

A statistician gathers numerical data and then displays it, helping companies to make sense of quantitative data and to spot trends and make predictions. They typically design data acquisition trials and apply statistical methodology to complex data.

  • Mathematician

A mathematician uses an extensive knowledge of mathematics in their work, typically to solve mathematical problems. Mathematicians are concerned with numbers, data, quantity, structure, space, models and change.

  • Cryptographer

Cryptographers secure computer and information technology systems by creating algorithms and ciphers to encrypt data. They often also carry out the duties of a cryptanalyst, deciphering algorithms and cipher text to decrypt information.

  • Operation Research Analyst

Operations research analysts use advanced mathematical and analytical methods to help organizations solve problems and make better decisions.
