Olivet’s visual arts program provides training in a variety of areas including drawing, sculpting, painting, graphic designs, printmaking and ceramics. It is studio-oriented and your professors will often work alongside you to aid in skill development. Students of all levels are supported to attain professional skills in their field of choice.
All visual art majors or minors can apply for the Visual Arts Talent Scholarship of up to $3,000 per year, renewable for four years.
The Riethmiller Blackman Art Building houses Olivet’s Visual Arts Program. The facility includes an art gallery, fine art vault and art classrooms. The faculty/student ratio at Olivet is small , so there is maximum access to studio facilities. You’ll take studio classes in sculpture, painting, graphics and ceramics.
The focus of this concentration is the specific application of visual/artistic skills towards biological/medical/scientific ends. The student is trained to draw realistically and accurately as well as to master a variety of commercial design skills involving the reproduction of graphic materials. These skills, along with biological course work, prepare students to enter graduate programs leading to a master’s degree in biological/medical/scientific illustration.
The studio arts concentration is geared toward students who wish to express themselves through visual arts and aspire to build a career through their studio endeavors. This concentration also serves as a foundation for those wishing to attend a Master of Fine Arts graduate program in a specific studio focus.
A medical illustrator collaborates with scientists, physicians, and other specialists to transform complex medical and health information into visual images that have the potential to communicate to broad audiences.
Curators are in charge of a collection of exhibits in a museum or art gallery. They build up collections, develop ways in which objects, archives and artworks can be interpreted through exhibitions, publications, events and audio-visual presentations.
An art teacher specializes in teaching how to create and appreciate art. They teach drawing, painting, ceramics, printmaking, and many other forms of art.
Courtroom sketch artists attend judicial proceedings as members of the public or as credentialed media. They can quickly capture a moment on paper and then sell their work to media outlets who would otherwise be denied a visual record of the trial.
