Rising senior Nhu Nguyen was recently honored with the Multicultural Academic Achievement Award as one of the top five multicultural students at Olivet College. Nhu is proud to have her accomplishments recognized, and she is grateful that the OC community has helped her flourish.
“I am originally from Vietnam, but I came to the U.S when I was 15 and moved to Lansing a year later. I chose Olivet College because I love the small community where I can receive one-on-one interactions with the faculty members,” Nhu said. “I also enjoyed the tour when I first came to Olivet because I felt welcomed.”
Nhu’s first impression still rings true. She has close bonds with her professors and is a proud member of the Soronian organization.
“I’m an active member of the Soronian Society,” Nhu said. “I joined because I wanted to be more involved on campus. Soronian made me feel welcome, and I felt like I had a home away from home. All the girls in Soronian hold a special place in my heart, and I love all them all.”
Nhu is an accounting major, and she plans to take the CPA exam after graduation with the goal to work in public accounting as an auditor. She even served with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)program, using her skillset to help community members prepare their federal tax return, all while allowing her to gain valuable career experience.
“I have done a lot of community service during my time at OC, but the most impactful experience is when I participated in the VITA program on campus,” Nhu said. “The program provided me with better people skills, work ethic and an opportunity for more knowledge in my field of study.”
Nhu commends her professors for helping her achieve this success, both professionally and personally.
“I always have had a good relationships with my professors. English isn’t my first language, so during my first year, there were a lot of times I struggled with class lectures, but my professors were understanding,” Nhu explained. “They would stay after class to answer my questions and always tried to help me the best they could .”
Close relationships with professors are at the heart of Nhu’s college journey. Her advice to high school students revolves around these bonds.
“If you’re like me and want one-on-one interactions with professors where you can get the help you need right away, Olivet College is the place for you. The professors are willing to help and always try to make sure you’re successful,” she said. “During my time at Olivet College, I have learned to be more independent and more outspoken. I have not only gained more knowledge but also gained wonderful friendships that I will carry close to my heart. Being a Comet has helped me become who I am today by giving me an experience of a lifetime.”
