Professor John Wilterding teaches introductory chemistry, biochemistry, cell biology and DNA science. He is originally from northeastern Wisconsin. Prof. Wilterding earned a bachelor’s in biology, chemistry and secondary education at University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point, followed by a master’s degree in entomology and a doctorate in evolutionary biology from Michigan State University. While at MSU, Prof. Wilterding taught in the Lyman Briggs School’s biology program where he coordinated the laboratory sequences. For his research program, Prof. Wilterding studied entomology, with a focus on systematics (biological classification) and evolutionary biology. He also served in a one-year post-doctorate experience in membrane physiology, studying aspects of membrane transporters associated with extracellular acidification and cellular mechanisms of cystic fibrosis.

Prof. Wilterding has published a number of articles in these areas of biology as well as having developed an extended laboratory experience for students in DNA analysis, which was published in 2003 in the Journal of College Science Teaching. He has been active with student research projects with Olivet biology majors at Pierce Cedar Creek Institute in Hastings. In addition to actively continuing his work in biodiversity studying moths in the Great Lakes Basin, Prof. Wilterding is conducting long-term moth biodiversity studies at Pierce Cedar Creek, the college’s biological field station, known as Kirkelldel Biological Preserve, and other locations in Michigan, hoping to publish his findings.
