On Dec. 8, President Steven M. Corey, Ph.D., announced the Olivet College ADVANTAGE Scholarship at Sexton High School in Lansing. This scholarship will make Olivet College tuition-free for first-time students throughout Michigan who qualify for the Michigan Achievement Grant and are Pell-eligible. During the announcement, Olivet College senior and Sexton High School alum Byron Pearce stood in the crowd, cheering on the announcement.

“I know a lot of kids cannot afford college, but this opens the door for many kids to have a chance to come here and find themselves and build relationships,” Byron expressed.

When Bryon graduated from Sexton High School in 2018, he was able to attend Olivet College thanks to the Lansing Promise. He is a fitness management major and is also minoring in coaching. Aside from his studies, he is a part of the men’s track and field team and is vice president of Kappa Sigma Alpha.

When asked what the ADVANTAGE Scholarship meant to him and everyone it would impact, he said, “It means a lot because many kids who do not have the chance to go to college have a great chance to go and experience college and start building their future.”

This program aims to guarantee students, especially first-generation students and those from low-to-moderate-income families throughout Michigan, a quality, relationship-based college experience. More than 80% of first-time students will be supported through the Olivet College ADVANTAGE Scholarship.

Byron can attest how being a Comet made him the person he is today. He said, “Struggle and tough times have helped me become a better leader, more disciplined and a better person. The guidance of the upper-class athletes on my track team helped me. Dr. KayDee Perry, Ed.D., associate provost, has also been there with her big heart and spontaneous personality to keep my head on straight throughout the years.”
